The Chemical Educational Foundation® (CEF) is giving students and classrooms an opportunity to win a $100 Amazon gift card and the chance to have a chemist visit their classroom via a video call facilitated by CEF. Students will have the opportunity to ask the chemist about their path to chemistry, their career, what they love about their job, what cool projects they’ve worked on, and any other questions they have.

The National Chemistry Week 2017 theme is “Chemistry Rocks!” CEF is asking students in grades K-8 to rewrite the lyrics of a popular rock song to demonstrate their love of chemistry and science. Fully rewritten songs are suggested, but a single verse or chorus also qualify. Written submissions are required. Bonus points will be awarded to any student or class that submits a performance video of their song. Classes may enter as one submission or students may enter individually. The more imaginative students get with their lyrics (and performance), the better chance they have of winning the top prize!

How To Enter:

To enter the contest, teachers should send written lyric entries (and attach the digital file of the performance video, if submitting) to comments@chemed.org. To keep the contest submission confidential during the contest review period, please do NOT upload your performance video to any social media platform(s). Please include the student or classroom name, grade, school, and contact information (parent or teacher name, email address, and phone number).

Submissions are due Thursday, October 26. CEF staff members will pick and announce the top winner Friday, October 27, at noon EDT. The gift card and video call with a chemist will be awarded to the classroom of the winning submission.
